Which jewelry does not discolor?

"Waterproof" is one of the most used, but also most misunderstood words in jewelry marketing. The short answer for stainless steel jewelry: Yes, it is really waterproof – but not every metal equally deserves this label.

Why stainless steel reacts differently than other metals: Silver tarnishes over time because it reacts with sulfur compounds in the air and water. Gold-plated brass or copper loses its thin coating as soon as moisture gets underneath it. Stainless steel, on the other hand, forms a natural, extremely stable oxide layer that prevents further corrosion.

The one exception: Chlorine and saltwater over prolonged periods do not harm the stainless steel itself, but for gold-plated surfaces to shine particularly long, we recommend rinsing jewelry briefly with clear water afterward.

Can you shower with stainless steel jewelry?
